If you are searching for the cost of a windshield chip repair in Austin, the short answer is $85 in our North Austin shop or $125 if we come to you, and if you carry comprehensive insurance there is a good chance you pay nothing. The longer answer, which is worth two minutes, is about whether your damage still qualifies for a repair, because that window closes fast in Central Texas.

What a windshield chip repair costs in Austin in 2026

Prices in the Austin and Round Rock market cluster in a narrow band, so there is not much to shop on price alone. Here is what you should expect:

ServiceJRD priceTypical Austin range
Single chip repair, in-shop$85$75 to $130
Single chip repair, mobile (we come to you)$125$100 to $175
Chip repair with comprehensive insuranceOften $0$0 (deductible commonly waived)
Windshield replacement (if the chip has spread)$300 to $1,200 installedSee the 2026 cost guide

Our repair price includes the resin injection, curing, polishing and a lifetime warranty on the repair: if a repaired chip ever spreads, we credit the $85 toward a replacement. Most repairs take 20 to 30 minutes, and you can drive immediately afterward.

Can my chip be repaired? The 10-second test

Technicians use the same three checks whether they work for us or a national chain. Your windshield can usually be repaired if all of these are true:

  • Size: the chip is smaller than a quarter, or the crack is shorter than about six inches (a dollar bill is a good ruler).
  • Location: the damage is not directly in the driver's line of sight and does not touch the edge of the glass. Edge cracks spread under body flex and rarely hold.
  • Depth: only the outer layer of glass is damaged. If you can feel the chip from inside the car, the inner layer is compromised and the windshield needs replacing.

Three or more chips, a crack that has already started to run, or damage that sits over a camera or sensor usually means a windshield replacement instead. If your vehicle has a forward-facing camera, that replacement includes ADAS recalibration at JRD; make sure any other quote you get says the same.

Why waiting is expensive in Austin

A chip is a stress point. Every time the glass expands and contracts, the stress concentrates at that point until it releases as a crack. Austin gives a windshield more of those cycles than almost anywhere: a car parked in the sun at 2 p.m. can have surface glass above 150°F, and the first blast of air conditioning drops the inside surface by 40 degrees in seconds. We see chips that sat fine for a month in March run across the glass in a single August afternoon. The repair price does not change with age, but the odds that you still qualify for one do.

Two other things accelerate spreading: hitting a pothole or speed bump, and washing the car with cold water on a hot day. If you cannot get in right away, keep a piece of clear tape over the chip so dirt does not pack into it, which makes the repair less invisible.

Does insurance cover chip repair in Texas?

If your policy includes comprehensive coverage, glass damage is covered. Many carriers waive the deductible entirely for a chip repair because it saves them a replacement claim later, so the repair is free to you and does not count as an at-fault claim. Texas does not require insurers to waive the deductible, so it depends on your policy; when you call, we can check your coverage and bill the carrier directly. You also choose the shop; the insurer cannot require you to use a specific one. We wrote a full guide to how windshield insurance works in Texas.

What a repair looks like

  1. We clean the impact point and remove loose glass.
  2. A bridge tool seals over the chip and pulls a vacuum to draw air and moisture out.
  3. Clear resin is injected under pressure into the break, then cured with UV light.
  4. The surface is scraped level and polished.

A good repair restores the structural strength of the glass and makes the chip 70 to 90 percent less visible. It does not make it disappear; if a perfectly clear view matters to you, that is a reason to choose replacement.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a windshield chip repair cost in Austin?

At JRD a single chip repair is $85 in our North Austin shop or $125 mobile anywhere in the Austin metro. Most Austin shops charge between $75 and $175. With comprehensive insurance the repair is often free because many carriers waive the deductible.

Can a windshield chip be repaired or does it need to be replaced?

A chip smaller than a quarter, or a crack shorter than about six inches, that is not in the driver's line of sight and not touching the edge of the glass can usually be repaired. Spreading cracks, edge damage, three or more chips, or damage over a camera usually call for replacement.

How long does a chip repair take?

About 20 to 30 minutes, and you can drive right away.

Will the chip disappear after repair?

No. A repair restores the strength of the glass and makes the chip 70 to 90 percent less visible, but a faint mark usually remains.
